Join us for an informative session where you can learn about the most common challenges affecting oaks in our region. Topics will include: understanding oak decline and how if impacts our forests, timber management practices, pest and insect diseases such as bur oak blight, chestnut borer, and oak wilt, and effects of storm events on oaks and how to prepare for future events. Improve your diagnostic skills by learning how to assess and act on current oak problems. Learn about management solutions such as injections, growth regulators, trenching, nutrient deficiencies and more.

Speakers

Joe Herring: District Forester for the Iowa DNR
Joe Herring has worked for the Iowa DNR for over 15 years. He provides technical advice assistance to private landowners on forest land management on topics ranging from forest habitat to timber and wildlife. He leads the Forest Service’s Forest Stewardship program. He provides technical as well as shares financial assistance programs for landowners to implement conservation practices.

Tivon Feeley: Forest Health Specialist for the Iowa DNR
Tivon Feeley started has been with the Iowa DNR since 2007. Prior to 2007 he worked as an Extension Forester at ISU. At ISU Extension, he primarily focused on urban forestry and forest health. Lastly, from 1996-2000 he worked as a Diagnosticians in the ISU Plant Disease Clinic. During his time at the DNR he has watched his job duties change from monitoring for native pests to monitoring for non-native pests. Iowa has gone from rarely ever treating Spongy Moth to having to treat it every few years. The forest health climate in Iowa is changing. However, we still need to deal with the native pests and the funding to work with the native pests has dried up, creating a challenge.

Justin Matlock: Great Plains Territory Manager (KS, MO, IA, NE) for Rainbow Treecare Scientific Advancements
Justin Matlock has over 14 years of green industry experience. As the Midwest Territory Manager, Justin provides products, equipment, protocol training and education to tree care professionals across Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Nebraska. He strives to not just be a “distributor” but a true resource for his clients. His hometown is Kansas City, KS. His hobbies and interests include coaching youth basketball, playing the guitar, hiking, camping, and fly fishing. His favorite tree is the Bur oak. If he could invite 3 people to a dinner party, he would choose Jim Carey, Larry McMurtry, and John Muir
