Lifetime Stewardship Award

Presented in Recognition of a Lifetime Devoted to Iowa’s Trees

2026- Mark Rouw

At the recent Iowa Arbor Expo, the Iowa Arborist Association (IAA) honored Mark Rouw with the Lifetime Stewardship Award for his decades of dedication to documenting and preserving Iowa’s largest trees. Known as Iowa’s “Big Tree Guru,” Mark has spent years traveling across the state to locate, measure and record champion trees with remarkable precision. His passion has led to the discovery of several new state champions, increased awareness of significant trees and a greater appreciation for Iowa’s natural heritage. He carefully documents each tree’s measurements, ensuring their significance is recognized and preserved for future generations.

Mark’s work has been featured in several publications and educational resources, including Iowa Outdoors magazine and The Daily Iowan, helping share his knowledge and passion with an even wider audience. His legacy serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting Iowa’s remarkable trees and recognizing the individuals who dedicate their lives to preserving them.

Mark’s commitment goes far beyond measuring trees, often investing his own time and money into a mission that benefits communities across Iowa. Recognizing the importance of his work, IAA began providing annual financial support about a decade ago to help further his efforts. Although many of Iowa’s giant trees have been lost, Mark’s documentation helps ensure their stories are not forgotten. His dedication reflects IAA’s mission to foster appreciation for Iowa’s trees, promote preservation and encourage responsible stewardship. Through this award, IAA celebrates Mark’s many years of service and his lasting impact on Iowa’s trees and the people who value them.
