Scholarship Program
Scholarship Objective
To provide a scholarship that can assist students pursuing a higher education in fields related to professional tree care and maintenance. This scholarship program is broken into two categories:
1) College Scholarship, which provides funds for tuition and books.
2) Conference Awards, which will provide funds for registration and hotel room costs for Iowa Arborist Association (IAA), Shade Tree Short Course, Midwestern International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) conferences or other educational conferences.
Students are encouraged to apply for both categories.
Amount of the Award
1) College scholarship–the maximum award provided for one academic year will be $500.00, provided in a single payment during the fall semester or quarter.
2) Conference award–will cover the cost of the conference with a maximum award of $250.00.
Administration of Scholarships
A Scholarship Committee (comprised of Iowa Arborists Association Members) will be responsible for screening and selecting scholarship winners. The Scholarship Selection Committee shall be solely responsible for the number of individual scholarships awarded, and depending on the quality of the applicant pool and funding may choose to offer zero scholarships in any given year.
Application Instructions-College Scholarship
Each applicant is responsible for all of the following materials being received by the Scholarship Selection Committee post-marked on or before the February 15th deadline.
- Letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the College/University.
- An official transcript(s) of courses and grades covering all courses up to the time of applying for this scholarship
This scholarship is a one-time, non-renewable grant. Any tax obligation arising form the award is the responsibility of the recipient. Applicants must be full-time sophomores, juniors, or seniors enrolled in college. No application will be considered until all materials have been received by the Scholarship Selection Committee on or before the annual meeting each year for fall enrollment of that year. No application materials postmarked after February 15th will be considered
All applicants will be notified of their status at the IAA annual meeting, which is held in conjunction with the Shade Tree Short Course.
This scholarship is awarded for the purpose of attending a specific institution to study arboriculture, urban forestry, forestry, horticulture or related fields. This scholarship is awarded without regard to race, color, national origin, age, sex, or people with limited ability. All applicants must be residents and students within the state of Iowa.
College scholarship recipients will be required to write an article for the IAA’s newsletter. The article should be about 1) the conference they attended or 2) their experience at the school they are attending and/or their career goals.
Application Instructions-Conference Award

- Letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the College/University.
- An official transcript(s) of courses and grades covering a period of at least one full semester/quarter just prior to applying for this scholarship.
This conference award is a one-time, non-renewable grant. Any tax obligation arising from the award is the responsibility of the recipient. Applicants must be full-time freshman, sophomores, juniors, or seniors enrolled in college. No application will be considered until the Scholarship Selection Committee has received all materials. All applicants will be notified of their status as soon as possible after application deadline.
